How To Get Started (With Anything)

We’ve all been there.

A new idea sparks to life—maybe it’s a business, a podcast, a painting, a band, a community project. You’re excited. You start researching, gathering inspiration, maybe pinning things to a board or writing notes in your phone. But then?

You stall.

And the longer you wait, the more overwhelming it feels. Sound familiar?

The truth is: starting is its own creative act. And while research and planning can help, there comes a point when they quietly transform into avoidance. So let’s talk about how to break that loop and actually get started—with anything—in a way that’s courageous, sustainable, and deeply aligned with your values.

Research Is a Tool—Not a Crutch

Don’t get us wrong: we love a well-researched plan. But perfectionism loves to hide in “just one more article” or “I need to be more prepared.” Preparation becomes procrastination when you start feeling stuck instead of inspired.

Try this instead:

Set a research limit. Give yourself 3 days or 5 articles max, and then transition into doing mode. Take one small action—even if it’s messy.

💡 Progress over perfection. Movement over mastery.

Start Before You’re Ready

Spoiler alert: no one ever feels 100% ready. That perfect moment you’re waiting for? It’s a myth. The best way to build clarity, confidence, and momentum is to begin—right where you are, with what you’ve got.

  • Want to launch a podcast? Record one messy episode.

  • Thinking of freelancing? Create a portfolio with 2-3 samples.

  • Writing a book? Draft the first terrible paragraph.

It’s okay to start small. Tiny beginnings often lead to surprisingly powerful results.

Use Structure, Not Strictness

Some guidance is helpful. Too much becomes paralyzing. Instead of rigid timelines or pressure-packed goals, try using gentle frameworks to support your momentum:

  • A “next right thing” list (one step at a time)

  • A weekly check-in ritual

  • An accountability buddy or group

  • Time-blocking for creative space

  • 80/20 thinking: Focus on the 20% of effort that creates 80% of results

Remember Why You’re Doing It

Fear tends to get loud when we’re about to do something meaningful. Reconnect to your why—not the marketability or strategy, but the heart.

Ask yourself:

  • Why does this matter to me?

  • Who could be helped or inspired by this?

  • What part of me is asking to be expressed here?

When you anchor in purpose, taking the next step becomes less about performance—and more about presence.

You Don’t Need to Know Everything Yet

You’re not building a skyscraper in one day. You’re taking the first few steps on a winding trail. You’ll learn more by doing than you ever will by waiting. Mistakes will happen, and they’re not the end—they’re part of the path.

You can revise, relaunch, refresh. You can pivot. You can grow into it. But you can’t imagine your way into progress. You have to begin.
